A 60-day journey circling Australia is being halted days after the death of an senior woman who was left behind by the cruise liner on a distant tropical isle.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but parted ways from the group for a break. The liner left without her and returned later that day after the personnel became aware the woman was unaccounted for.

A large-scale rescue mission located her body the next day.

Authorities are looking into the tragedy, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Head of the shipping company said that passengers and staff on the ship were told that the continuation of the cruise had been called off due to the "sad loss and previous technical problems".

In a statement, he mentioned that travelers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the travelers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated statement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Commander" prohibiting any additional guests from getting on the vessel.

The representative said that they would visit the vessel in the port city upon its return.

The ship first departed the coastal city on 24 October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the moment of the senior passenger's passing. The tropical location was the opening port on the journey.

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her family was "shocked and distressed that the vessel left the island after an planned tour without my parent".
