The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
