From Struggling to Imperfect – Are There Any Contenders Truly Desiring to Secure the NFL Championship During This Campaign?
No major competition promotes equal footing in the manner of the NFL: it's their core marketing message. However, after ten games during the current schedule, this doesn't represent a landscape that is equally balanced separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Instead, it's a scenario where most of the league is simply sufficient.
Clear Picture in NFC
In the NFC, for the most part, there is some clarity. The Rams along with the Seahawks (both at 7-2) seem like the most well-rounded squads in the NFL, and achieved overwhelming triumphs during Sunday's action. Philadelphia at 6-2 despite their struggles maintain among the most gifted lineups across the NFL, similar to the Packers (5-2-1 record). Even the Lions (six and three), with their fluctuating form in trench play and navigating internal staff conflicts, have proven they're capable of dominating good teams. For each of these squads, one can readily put together a Super Bowl path.
Muddled AFC Picture
Turning to the American Football Conference, postseason landscape is thoroughly confusing. The current division frontrunners at this stage: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (5-4). Read that again. No Chiefs presence. Buffalo is missing. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. Historically strong franchises, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, have either significant personnel gaps or are dealing with health issues.
Parity Mechanics
To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. However, witnessing the current division frontrunners in the AFC continues to seem unusual. Areas of each team pass the championship smell test, yet not completely. If you were asked to finalize your AFC title game selections today, could you assuredly select any one of these four teams?
Squad Examinations
Indianapolis Colts
Beginning with the Colts, Daniel Jones hasn't yet achieved total collapse. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He’s back to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. He suffered seven sacks versus Atlanta during Sunday's contest, and had a brief period where he delivered a pick and fumbled three times. This follows he turned the ball over on five occasions facing the Steelers.
The Colts attack performed well initially as Jones prevented game-changing errors. Taylor along with the blockers ensure Indianapolis remains able to withstand some negative plays, as demonstrated overseas. Yet Jones going back to his old blunder-prone days would end any playoff run.
New England Analysis
The Patriots seem somewhat similar. Last season, they were a punchline. Now, they’re football's most unexpected success and the most successful franchise in the NFL after seven straight wins. Except for losing due to fumbles a contest they should have won against Pittsburgh, they’d be sitting at 9–1 as the league's best. Last season, they seemed veteran and plodding. Currently they're young, fast and unafraid. Still, it’s hard to ignore how soft the Patriots’ schedule has been. They have faced the least challenging lineup in the league, and flaws have still emerged. Their quarterback has been brought down 35 times – the second-most in football – including particular impacts he absorbed on Sunday appeared dangerous. With continued play, that punishment compounds.
Denver Broncos
The Broncos are eight wins similarly, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles all the heavy lifting. Absent adequate signal-calling, the Broncos won't frighten any playoff team. The Chargers are also hovering in the Western division with seven wins, yet medical problems along their offensive line will make it tough for extended playoff success.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Then we have the Steelers, somehow still leading the AFC North even after suffering a 25-10 defeat from the Chargers on Sunday night. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defensive unit frequently falters, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations during his career phase continue to show up. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, yet Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again with manageable games ahead, are riding a three-game streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that Baltimore has closed within a game of the Steelers, but how rapidly this occurred represents criticism toward Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record and currently seem likely to claim the title speaks volumes regarding the complete conference.
Historical Favorites
The Ravens represent a segment among three elite teams – together with Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, that would continue to generate the highest anxiety in opposing teams should they reach postseason. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, yet Kansas City and Buffalo continue to self-destruct.
Bills Struggles
Previously, the Bills were riding high following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered a particularly discouraging setback this year. They didn’t just lose against Miami; they suffered humiliation, falling 30-13 on the road. It was Miami’s first win versus Buffalo in several seasons.
