2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Revitalize Troubled Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Reception

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer direction.

Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

The news echoes a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the entire content from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I know you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the need for a clearer vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our fans.

The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in receiving him in the coming days. We are all excited to keep seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to come.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in last year together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Face the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that change every round. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or go big, put it on the line, and hope your team can secure victory? The option is in your hands."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official debut schedule or consoles, but players can expect further news as production progresses.
